“Bringin’CountryBack”ismorethanacatchphraseforZaneWilliams.Itisarallyingcryforareturntoauthenticityandsubstanceinmainstreamcountrymusic,andafittingtitleforhissixthstudioalbum.“Ithinkofcountrymusicaspoetryforthecommonman,”hesaysreflectively.“Thestoriesthatdrawyouin,thesimpletruthstatedinawayyouwishyoucould’vesaid...there’sanhonestytocountrymusicthattotallygrabbedmethefirsttimeIheardit.”Thatplain-spoken,down-homehonestyhasnowbecomethecallingcardforZane’sowncareer,landinghimfour#1songsontheTexasradiocharts,openinggigswithheroeslikeGeorgeJonesandAlanJackson,andevenaninvitationtoperformattheGrandOleOpryin2015.Thegenuinequalityofhismusicisnofluke.Inaworldwheremostpopularmusiciscreatedbycommittee,Zanewritesthevastmajorityofhissongsalone,whenevertheinspirationstrikes.“IgetalotofideaswhileI’mbusydoingothertasks,”hesays,“saydrivingdowntheroad,ordoingdishes,ormowingtheyard.MywifecanalwaystellwhenI’mworkingonasongbecausemytoeistapping,mylipsaremoving,andIcan’thearawordshe’ssaying.”Takingthereinsforthefirsttimeassoleproduceronthisproject,Williamssaysthatbeinganindependentartisthasitsadvantages.“Wedidn’thaveanyhoopstojumpthroughforthisrecord,andnoonetopleasebutourselves.Ijustwentintothestudiowithmyfavoriteplayers,mostofwhomplaywithmeontheroad,andIdidmybesttocreatearecordthatsoundslikethemusicIlove.”ForZane,thatmeanslotsofharmonies,fiddle,andsteelguitarwrappedaroundsongsthat,whilecarefullycrafted,leanmoretowardgood-naturedshowmanshipthangloomyintrospection.Unsurprisingly,mostofthesubjectmatterdrawsitsinspirationfromZane’scurrentlifeexperiences.Heoffersthelistenersomeroad-testeddancehalladviceintherollicking“HonkytonkSituation,”while“SlowRoller”and“That’sJustMe”celebratehistraditionalvaluesagainstabackdropofeasy-going,mid-tempogrooves.OnlytwiceontherecorddoesZanebreakfromhisreallifesituationtoplayacharacterrole...firstasacowboydownonlovein“IDon’tHavetheHeart,”andsecondasarecentdivorcéintheheartbroken“GoodbyeLove.”HecloseswithanhomagetocountrymusiclegendWillieNelson,whosediscoveryofmusicalindependenceinTexashasmanyparallelswithZane’sown.Earlyon,neitherZanenorhisfamilywould’veguessedheonedaywouldbecomethestandard-bearerfortraditionalcountrymusicthatheistoday.BorninAbilene,TX,toapairofcollegeprofessors,ZanewasmovedasachildfirsttoKentucky,thenWestVirginia,andthenCaliforniaashisparentspursuedtheiracademiccareers.Whileheenjoyedsingingharmonyinchurchandcomposinghisowninstrumentalpiecesonthefamilypiano,itwasn’tuntilheturnedsixteenandgotthecarkeys(andcontroloftheradioinside)thathehadhisfirsttransformativeexperiencewithcountrymusic.“I’mflippingstationsandIlandonBobKingsley’sCountryCountdownoneSundaymorningafterchurch,andIhearthisguyGarthBrookssinging“TheDance.”Ihadjustbrokenupwithmyfirstgirlfriend,andthatsongwreckedme;itcutrightthroughmelikenosongeverhad.”Notlongafter,hisparentsboughthimausedguitarasarewardforgoodtestscores,andZanebegantryinghishandatwritinghisownsongs.Hewasassurprisedasanyonetofindhehadaknackforturningaphraseandtellingastoryinsong.Still,acareerincountrymusicseemedfar-fetched,sohefollowedhisparents’adviceandenrolledasamathmajoratAbileneChristianUniversity.Bythetimehewalkedacrossthestagefouryearslatertoaccepthisdiploma,hishobbyhadblossomedintoapassion,andhemovedtoNashvillein1999topursuemusicfulltime.MusicCity,whereco-writingwaslikeshakinghandsandpopinfluencesdominatedthetrends,provedtobeapoorfitforatradition-lovingyoungmanwhodidhisbestworkindependently.In2006,ZanereleasedhisfirststudioalbumHurryHome,thetitletrackofwhichlaterbecameatop-20Billboardhitforthen-SonyartistJasonMichaelCarroll.Despitethissuccess,hisnineyearsinNashvilleleftZanedisillusionedwiththestateofthecountrymusicindustryanddissatisfiedwithsimplywritingsongsforotherartists.Soin2008Zaneleftastaff-writerpublishingdealtomovebacktohiswife’shometownofMcKinney,TX,startafamily,andstarthiscareeroverasanindependentartist.“Irememberturningmyofficekeysintomypublisher,sittingthereinthecar,andfeelingsofrustrated.Theylikedmymusic,buttheyjustdidn’tknowwhattodowithit.ItfeltlikeIwasgivinguponmydream.”Howeveritdidn’ttakelongforthatdreamtobereborn,ashequicklyfoundinTexasawelcomehomeforhisbrandofhonest,traditionalcountrymusic.“InTexas,allthemiddlemenstandingbetweenmeandthefansweregone.Icouldjustmakerecords,playshows,andbemyself.Ifoundoutitdidn’thavetobecomplicated.”Fourmoreindependentrecordsfollowed,eachattractingawideraudiencethanthelast.WhenZaneputtogetherhisfirstbandatage33,hewasadecadeolderthanmostofthenewartistsonthescene,andmuchmoreexperiencedasasongwriter,yethisobviousloveofperformingandconnectingwithhisfansinfusedhisshowswithayouthfulpassion.Bringin’CountryBackmeldsthatpassionwithhishard-earnedexperienceasaperformerandproducertocreatehismostconfidentworkyet.“Ijustlovecountrymusic,andIdon’twanttoseeitfallbythewayside,”hesays.“Iwantedtocreatealaid-back,old-schoolcountryalbumthatfolkscouldlistentoonthebackporchwiththesungoingdown.It’snothingfancy,butit’sreal.”Andisn’tthatwhatcountrymusicshouldbe?
